Ginger Snaps: Hungry Like the Wolf
February is Women in Horror Month and we want to celebrate the best way we know how- with a good scary flick and some tasty food. We’ll be sharing recipes for the next few weeks inspired by our favorite women in horror. First up? Ginger Snaps. Ginger and her sister, Brigitte, are two teenage girls going through an angst stage, and obsessing over death. When Ginger gets her first visit from “Aunt Flow,” which happens to be on the night of a full moon, she gets bitten by a werewolf. Ginger’s behavior goes wild as she starts to transform into a werewolf. While Ginger is viciously attacking people, Brigitte knows she needs to find a way to stop her sister before it’s too late. Ginger Snaps is one of our favorite female films and we think it’s even better paired with these ginger infused recipes.
Ginger Beef Stir Fry-
Ingredients:
1 lb boneless beef sirloin steak, cut into strips
1 red onion, sliced
1 head broccoli, cut into florets
1 red pepper, sliced
3/4 cups orange juice
3 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp fresh grated ginger, or 2 tsp ground ginger
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
1 Tbsp honey
2 tsp cornstarch
1 Tbsp sesame oil
rice to serve
Directions:
Mix orange juice, soy sauce, ginger, garlic, cumin, and pepper flakes. Add half of the mixture to a glass bowl or plastic zip lock bag. Add steak and toss to coat. Marinate in fridge for 20 minutes.
After marinating, stir fry beef strips in the sesame oil for 3 minutes, or until no longer pink. Remove from pan.
Add onion, red pepper, and broccoli to the pan. Cook for about 5 minutes. Add the honey and cornstarch to the remaining marinade. Whisk to combine and pour over veggies. Boil for about 2 minutes until thickened.
Add the beef back to the pan and cook another minute.
Serve over rice. Make sure to drink a ginger beer with this meal!
