Poltergeist TV Dinner

“Theeeeeey’re heeeeeeere.” For those of us who have seen Poltergeist (and the ones like us who have seen it more times than they can count), we can just hear those two creepy words coming from Carol Anne and it sets the tone. The Freeling family were living a pretty normal life until the night young Carol Anne started hearing things from the static on the television set. As an earthquake occurred, the apparitions came out of the television and into their home. Chairs began to stack by themselves, silverware was bending, trees came to life and a portal opened up in Carol Anne’s closet. A Medium was sent in (the late Zelda Rubinstein, who us girls can remember from the awesome Teen Witch movie) to clean out the house of the poltergeist and bring Carol Anne back from the portal she was sucked into. Besides the film itself being pretty damn scary, the real horror is what went on behind the scenes. Between the three Poltergeist films, 4 cast members died  in that small window of time. Some claim the “Poltergeist Curse” came from the fact that real skeletons were used in the end pool scene, but whatever the theories may be, Poltergeist went down in history as one the scariest films ever, on-screen and off.

In same pan, melt butter for gravy. Add onions and saute a few minutes. Add mushrooms and saute a few more minutes.

Sprinkle flour over mushrooms and onions. Stir to coat and cook a few minutes.

Slowly whisk in beef broth and cook for a few minutes.

Add beef patties back to pan and simmer for another 10 minutes until cooked through and gravy is thickened.

Serve with mashed potatoes and peas and carrots.

For an authentic “TV dinner” feel, we served our steaks in these containers:

Theeeeey’re heeeeeeeere…let’s have a drink.
