Birdemic: Shock, Terror, and Great Food
Remember when we told you about Troll 2 being the best worst movie ever? Well, Birdemic is definitely in the running to take away that title. The first time we saw this movie Nicole was working for a film company and brought home a screener. About five minutes into the film, she called a co-worker and demanded answers to a million questions. So this is the finished film? Yes. The audio on this is final? Yep. And the director really thought this was a good movie? Oh yeah. What about the birds- those can’t be it, right? No, those are it- final screener. Oh shit, our minds were blown. All you really need to know about the plot is that our main characters, Rod and Nathalie, meet and start dating, but soon find themselves defending attacks against killer birds (at first, fighting them off with coat hangers!). It’s as simple as that, but Birdemic might just be the most entertaining movie we’ve seen. This film played across the nation at special screenings to sold out audiences for good reason. It’s definitely one you want to see with a room full of friends and a case of beer. We swear it will not disappoint, nor will these kickass recipes to go with it. And don’t forget to read below the recipes for our awesome giveaway!
We can’t possibly sit through a movie without food, so let’s get to cooking before our feature presentation of Birdemic.
Let’s start with a wicked appetizer.
6 large eggs
3 tbsp mayonnaise
2 tbsp mustard
Salt and pepper, for taste
Bring pot of water to a boil and gently place eggs in for 7 minutes at hard boil. Remove and run under cold water. Remove the shell of each and halve the eggs lengthwise. Remove yolks and place in a small bowl. With hand mixer, mix yolks, mayonnaise & mustard together. Add salt and pepper to taste. Fill egg whites evenly with yolk mixture. Sprinkle generously with paprika. Ready to serve.
Killer Eagle Cocktail
1 medium egg
1/2 cup cream Sherry
Shake the egg and sherry along with 6 ice cubes until smooth. Strain into glass. Top with nutmeg if desired.
And now for a killer main course.
Beer Can Chicken
1 whole chicken
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp honey
1 garlic clove, chopped
2 cans of your favorite beer
Remove neck and giblets from chicken and discard. Rinse chicken inside and out, and pat dry with paper towels. Place chicken in large zip lock bag with all ingredients and 1/3 can beer. Drink the rest (our favorite part). Let chicken sit overnight.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Drink 1/2 of the second beer and remove the top of the can with a knife or scissors, leaving the remaining beer in the can. Place can in casserole dish. Remove the chicken from the zip lock bag and set aside. Pour remaining mixture from the bag into the beer can. Gently place bird cavity over the beer can. The chicken should be upright in the casserole dish. Place dish on lowest rack in the oven. Loosely cover chicken with foil for and cook for 40 minutes. Remove foil and reduce heat to 350 degrees and continue to cook for additional 90 minutes or until the internal temperature registers 160-165 degrees in the breast. Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before gently lifting chicken off of the can. Carve and ready to serve.
To finish off our night of shock & terror.
1 cup chocolate chips
2 cup butterscotch chips
6 ounces chow mein noodles
1/2 cup walnuts
1/4 cup jelly beans
Heat chocolate and butterscotch chips in double boiler, stirring until completely melted. In large bowl, add chow mein noodles & walnuts. Pour melted mixture over the dry ingredients and mix well with a spatula to evenly coat the noodles. Scoop tablespoonfuls of mixture into muffin pan holes, gently pressing the center down and making sure to line the sides. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm. Remove from pan and add jelly beans to the center of the nest.
